BORDENTOWN, NJ –

This past weekend, the Bordentown Police put out an awareness post on their facebook about several black bear sightings around the Laurel Run Apartments.

One sighting was on June 10th at 10pm and a second sighting on June 13th around 1am. The Police notified the Department of Wildlife Protection-Division of Fish and Wildlife and recommended that residents become aware of a few safety tips:

  • Never feed or approach a bear. Remain calm if you do and do not run, as it could entice the bear as a challenge.
  • Make the bear aware of your presence by making noises, clapping your hands, or with an assertive voice. Scare them away with pots and pans, air horns, and making yourself look as big as possible with your arms in the air.
  • If a bear enters your home, provide it with an escape route by opening all doors.
  • Families who are frequented by black bears should have a Bear Plan in place for children, with an escape route and planned use of whistles or air horns.
